Following the release of the live session Dummy Death Dancing in 2024 and _aftercrash in 2025 — a curious EP/cassette born from collages and recombinations of improvisations, in praise of liminal spaces — SCP-055 presents its first full-length album: something lives inside.
Written between 2023 and 2025 in the musty moisture of basements in Seine-Saint-Denis and recorded in a former cinema, the album’s 18 tracks form a strong sonic cohesion, reflecting the band’s uncompromising stance.
Moving through and inhabiting a multitude of musical and visual territories, the album draws on a wide range of influences, as evidenced by the 7 videos accompanying its release. A plural, all-encompassing object, something lives inside can just as readily take its listeners by the hand as cut it off — constantly reinventing itself throughout the 59 minutes of this vibrant wandering.
As the stories behind its name suggest, SCP-055 refuses to be defined or categorised. something lives inside is therefore meant to be experienced like the fragmentary memory of a winding dream, desperately reconstructed upon waking.
At once an impression of fury (gaz lacrymo dedans; Rollercoaster VII), a swaying trance (Ouroboros, D.D.D.D.), a meditative flight (Décalage vers le Rouge) and an uncontrolled sonic implosion (Société de Cendre), the album offers a series of glimpses into a vertiginous universe of countless layers — inviting us as much to reflection as to revolt, as much to serenity as to madness.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
The album something lives inside opens with the first half of the diptych nousavonsleregretdevousinformerque, a powerful piece that feels like a frantic run where feet intertwine and trip up. An act of defiance, throwing yourself headfirst into a wall of distortion. A violin on probation — and even a harpsichord.
It gives way to Ouroboros and D.D.D.D. (dummy death dancing drill), a journey through the transcendent echoes of a disjointed dance.. A bass ostinato and a hint of microtonality carry the piece towards new apocalyptic horizons.
The short, obsessive refrains of Mélodie Infantile behave like a childhood memory, a hazy nostalgia leading into an overwhelming, obsessive finale built around two notes, as the drums gradually take over the entire sonic space.
Rollercoaster VII (low battery self portrait) is a manifesto: abrupt shifts, an obsessive groove, wild dance, dark spells and sonic visions of Francis Bacon.
A long, spiralling journey of thought, Nihilist is one of the album’s most obsessive tracks. A challenge to the very notions of causality, intentionality, and the norms that shape existence.
Frisell Airlines takes a sideways step, an off-kilter folk. An interlude in the form of an endless dolly shot, its groove gradually transforms into a long-form essay increasingly traversed by dissonance.
In gaz lacrymo dedans, rhythmic energy spreads across the corpse of revolt, a saturated poison carried by a powerful riff crashing over bodies in struggle. In the distance, fire breaks out.
This track marks the beginning of a cycle centred on the symbolism of fire, which continues with KINGDOM (the fire) — a strange, gentle and unsettling sonic magma, as the flames gradually spread across the city.
My Realm is your Realm dresses itself in a simple melody and a veil of piano, a funeral song accompanying the slow incineration of bodies. It leads into the sudden to the razor-sharp Forêt, a furious twelve-tone metal interlude where the smell of burning leaves an impression of compacted sheet metal. Headbang inside a distorted space.
To close this scorched collection, Société de Cendre draws us into a contaminated world populated by beings wandering through the darkness. Frequencies collide in a radioactive atmosphere as the piece twists and coils, at times static, at times erupting with fury.
The journey is nearing its end. Décalage Vers Le Rouge presents a vibrating wall of sound, at once noise and progressive.
nousavonsleregretdevousinformerque returns and brings the album to its conclusion. Its violinistic microtonal rush finally unravels in a firework display painted in the colours of refusal.
All that remains is an electric whisper in a shabby hotel.
