In the fall of 2020, the pandemic notwithstanding, I traveled back to my birth state
of Michigan for an artist residency at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (locally known as “the Porkies”). I lived in Michigan as a child but am largely a European city slicker today, so it was a giant leap out of my comfort zone to work and wander in the rugged, breathtaking Upper Peninsula, on Lake Superior, for what became a transformative two weeks.
These songs were inspired by that solitary stay from September 1st to 14th, 2020
at “Dan’s Cabin,” with no phone reception, power, heat or running water. They run the gamut, from fear of confronting the flora and fauna (“Scared”) to a newfound awareness of the elements (“This Too Shall Pass,” “Rhythm of the Forest,” “Sparky the Caveman,” “Search for the Sun”), mourning the past (“Quiet”), embracing transition (“Spirit Snake”), and just plain fun (“Brown”). All sounds were recorded at the Porkies or by myself in the studio, in a reflection of this intense and immersive solo experience.
The title “Leaps and Bounds” came to mind as I realized just how powerful this
residency was, in terms of my creative output and inspiration. So often, we’re too
busy with life’s perceived priorities to nurture the projects that bring us true depth
and joy. I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to do so in crafting this new album, and hope you will enjoy this personal tribute to the Porkies.
